Running is both my healer and my torturer. I am no athlete, I moan before and during every run...yet the feeling afterwards is like nothing else.
Lying on the grass after my Saturday morning Parkrun, trying to catch my breath, my heart pounding...Best Feeling Ever. And if I'm honest, City To Surf participation has been my mid-life crisis... (much cheaper than buying a sports car.) Sadly Covid has meant that brilliant community event didn't happen in WA for 3 years. Fingers crossed that in 2023 I'll be running in a sea of like minded individuals along St Georges Terrace (and up the killer hill past Kings Park) again. Oh and Trail Running !! Combining nature and running - what's not to love?
The runners high is a real thing, it takes perseverance and patience, but it comes...sometimes long after your heart, lungs and legs have settled, but then, with practice, and if you are lucky, it happens during the run. But whether you achieve that awesome feeling or not, you can't help but feel a little bit of pride, a small accomplishment, maybe just a bit more motivation for the day, or even a little clarity as your brain fog starts to clear.
"Social Prescribing" is becoming more common among GP's as the health benefits of social activity is encouraged, to combat stress, anxiety, depression and loneliness and encourage general well being. There are community events like parkrun every weekend and wether you run, crawl, shuffle, or walk...you still cover the same distance as everyone else participating. Who knows, You may even inspire someone else to keep going when they feel like giving up.. If you can't walk or run, there are always volunteer spots too. Everyone loves Vollies, they make these events happen !!
A participation medal helps as a reminder that we showed up, we moved, we challenged our bodies (and often our minds too)...because we can.
